COM 307 is an introductory course on digital audio production. We will cover the basic qualities of sound, how it can be recorded and edited/manipulated.
To this end we need to think about sound as more than a sensation. It is possible to “feel” sound in many different ways. There is the physical sensation of sound itself. Then there is the meaning we attached to audio. We have all experienced the song that transports us to a different place. Sound is architecture. It is a construct that is experienced in many different ways. It is bound in our individual experience and culture at large.
We will spend time making audio artifacts. In part we need to master the technology itself, but perhaps it is even more important to have an understanding of sound. These projects will explore the basic mechanics of recording and editing audio. Along the way we will think about how audio works, for experience, for storytelling, for language.
